Addressing Substance Use at Work

Substance use and dependence problems can have a crippling impact on workplace health, safety and performance. Legalization of recreational and medical cannabis has added new complexities for employers, who must balance individual needs and workplace safety. This workshop examines the impact of substance use at work, equipping business professionals with the knowledge and skills to effectively address substance use  problems in a fair, safe and constructive manner.

Upon completion of this workshop participants will learn to:

  • Understand the impact, effects and challenges of substance use at work
  • Explain roles and responsibilities for promoting a safe and healthy workplace
  • Recognize and respond to potential indicators of a substance use problem
  • Identify high-risk signs that an employee may be unfit for duty
  • Discuss and apply strategies for responding to substance use issues
  • Recognize legal responsibilities, including the duty to accommodate
  • Identify resources to support recovery
